process

these minimal botanical shapes were some of the first things i started doodling at the start of my art process and were usually done as a way to regulate my nervous system——or slow down. while i’ve explored a lot of visual styles since then, i always come back to these here and there and usually at times when i’m close to burnout and probably need to slow down a notch… which was the case when i started this collection.

my initial plan wasn’t going to look anything like these and were going to be a lot more chaotic——but then i caught myself slowing down and painting very detailed shapes in one colour intuitively and it felt like some sort of sign from the universe that this was what i was to do.

i chose the raw, unstretched canvas to keep it simple and calming. the background of the canvas is perfectly textured as is and the coloured paper as the matte in the frame was chosen to make the paint colour of each shape really draw you in.

i put them in thrifted frames [or just some i had that i wasn’t using] to further build on the story; if we slow down a little, we might realize we have more than we think, we have what we really need, and we don’t need to buy more.
