The People Behind The Places is a 46 page travel ezine by Nouvelle Vague, an online indie surf and lifestyle ‘zine.

My role was creative director and designer. The zine features three articles written by Winnie Stubbs about three different unique creative spaces and the kind of people that might occupy them in south Sri Lanka.

Photographs were supplied by NV and credited throughout the project. NV was a non-profit org and made up of volunteer contributors primarily done out of passion for surf + travel.

skills highlighted:

editorial typography, graphic design, editorial layout, creative/art direction, brand adherence

The cover photo was selected because it fit with the title (the people behind the places) and was general enough to fit all three places. The overall composition of it portrays a peaceful, exploration vibe which a) would appeal to the NV audience and b) is exactly what the purpose of the ‘zine was.

the video below is a quick view of each spread:

about the project (from the writer of the ezine)

“I wrote most of this just before the fabric of our worlds changed forever, when travel was (for the privileged few) possible and even expected. Although reading back through makes me ache with nostalgia for what was, it also reminds me of how fortunate we are to have experienced this connected, creative world.

While the world is in a relative lockdown and trips to Sri Lanka are a distant dream, there’s magic in knowing that these special spaces are waiting.”

the video below is from another NV project [a much longer zine with a ton of travel surf stories] that i worked on but it was never officially finished or launched.
