Past and present is about knowing yourself; it is about taking care of yourself and all the stories from our inner worlds that help us find our place in the external world.
We can’t know how to be ourselves, we can’t know what we love, and we can’t help the world if we don’t know and don’t take care of ourselves.

a series about finding our way; this was an artist exploration using colours and boxes to understand who we were, who we are today, and who we want to be. past mistakes and imperfections help us grow if we reflect and learn from them.
the colours/boxes act as different rooms [times] from our lives to wander into to view from a present day perspective to perhaps discover ourselves, forgive ourselves, and have an overall greater sense of self.

these pieces invite slowing down to see what we need to see [the signs that often lead us to what our hearts want].
by visually portraying simple, natural forms [which is something i intuitively have always doodled as a way to ground myself] in just one colour of paint on a plain, raw canvas paired intentionally with the colour of the background in the frame, i hope to create a feeling of intuition and mindfulness in the viewer.

“see the good days [version two]”
mixed media on upcycled canvas
37.75x26 inches
about the highs and lows of emotions; without recognizing and being able to sit with deep sadness we cannot recognize the purest joy and if we never know what joy feels like, we’ll never be motivated to get out of the darkness. depression isn’t something to be ashamed of, to stay quiet about, to hide, to hope it magically goes away.
feel, express, cry. this is not weak; this represents the strongest and most emotionally intelligent type of person. this is the way out.

[the process from version one to two]
i painted version one of this near the end of 2024 and when i looked at it a year later, it wasn’t quite right; it was too moody and less optimistic/joyful.
for version two, i experimented a little… with water [mixed with paint, of course]. each layer went on really thin and naturally took forever to dry, but when it was dry enough i added yet another layer until i liked the way the colours finally looked together.
emotions are layered and emotional intelligence takes time to build. i see the two different versions and the number of layers fitting to that process.

about forgiveness and the importance of it——even if it’s yourself that you need to forgive or forgiving another is not reciprocated or known. do it anyway.
